Q. Is Israel CURRENTLY “the chosen people”?
It abounds in much of the professing church, among Charismatics, Pentecostals, Word Of Faith etc, that national, physical Israel are still “the chosen people”.
Q. Does scripture in the New Testament support this?
Not at all!
I. God can raise up sons of Abraham:
The Jews who prided themselves on their natural heritage as “sons of Abraham”, were soundly rebuked by John the Baptist saying “Do not say ‘We have Abraham as our father’. For God is able to raise up from these stones sons of Abraham!” (Lk 3:8)
Since it is nothing for God to make “Sons of Abraham” – even from mere stones, obviously physical descent means nothing to Him now.
II. NOT a Jew who is only one outwardly:
“28A man is not is a Jew because he is one outwardly, nor is circumcision only outward and physical. 29No, a man is a Jew because he is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise does not come from men, but from God” (Rom 2:28-29)
“6It is not as though God’s word has failed. For NOT all who are descended from Israel ARE Israel. 7Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants are they all his children. On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned. 8So it is NOT the children of the flesh who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as offspring” (Rom 9:6-8)
III. Jesus rebuked the Jews who assumed Abraham was their father:
“Abraham is our father,” they replied. “IF you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you would do the works of Abraham.” (Jn 8:39)
Note: Jesus here does not so much as acknowledge the physical ancestry! He instead focuses solely on the spiritual reality. “IF Abraham were your father”, means he was not!
IV. John the apostle explicitly declared,
“22Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son. 23NO ONE who denies the Son can have the Father; whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.” (1 Jn 2:22-23)
– HOW it is that Israel while she denies the Son can still have the Father, in the light of this passage, I have NEVER heard anyone even come close to show!
V. ALL Israel WILL be saved”:
“I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not be conceited: A hardening in part has come to Israel, UNTIL the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26And so ALL ISRAEL WILL be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove godlessness from Jacob.”
This suggests to many that God will once again return to national Israel and fulfill His covenant with “all” of them.
HOWEVER, that view fails to correctly understand HOW Paul had already defined who is and who is not a true Jew, earlier in Romans and elsewhere.
It ALSO fails to account for Romans 9:27 – “though the number of Israel is as the sand of the sea, ONLY the remnant will be saved“!
So if we take ALL the relevant truth Paul and John spoke, we end with this:
Physical descent in Abraham in, since Christ came, now meaningless.
True “Jews” are those who are born of the Spirit and believe in Jesus.
Not all from physical “Israel” ARE in fact, true “Israel” to God -but believers from both Jew and Gentiles are!
One does not and cannot have the Father if or as long as they deny the Son! You can’t have one without the other! 🙂
While ALL “Israel” WILL be saved, this does not mean every physical Jewish person will be.
Q. HOW will they be saved?
10″I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. 11″In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo.”
When God by His grace, brings the REMNANT to faith in the Lord Jesus, only THEN “all true Israel” will be saved. Once they acknowledge the Son, only then do they once again, have the Father as well.THEN, they will be “grafted in” again Paul said (Rom 11:18-35). To be “broken off”, requiring one be “grafted back in again”, obviously means that while “broken off”, they are not currently “the chosen people” of God!
Once “grafted in again”, to WHAT are they re-grafted in to? The “ONE body” of which Jesus is Lord, Saviour, Head – THE CHURCH, which is composed of believing Jews and Gentiles!
VI. God’s eternal intention was ALWAYS to have Jew and Gentile together
But this was a “mystery NOT revealed previously, but NOW made known” through the apostolic preaching of Paul
“…4In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5which was NOT made known to men in other generations as it has NOW been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus.” (Eph 3: 4-6).
VII. “There is only ONE body”
The New Testament consistently affirms that there is only ONE body
– composed of believing Jews and Gentiles
“are many are ONE body, and each member belongs to one another.” (Rom 12:5)
“There is ONE body and ONE Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called” (Eph 4:4)
“There is ONE God, One Lord, ONE faith” (Eph 4:5)
VIII. Adjectives which USED to describe Israel, now describe the church:
Israel in the past was “a holy nation”, “the chosen people”, “a nation with the priesthood”
HOWEVER, now Peter says of the believing church composed of Jews and Gentiles,
” For you are a CHOSEN GENERATION, a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION…” (1 Pe 2:9)
IX. Jesus has saved and redeemed men from EVERY nation, tribe and tongue (Rev 5:9)
– which obviously includes the nation of Israel.
The believing CHURCH is the ultimate purpose of God, whose goal is “to bring ALL things in heaven and on earth together IN CHRIST”
“10as a plan for the fullness of time, to bring all things in heaven and on earth together IN Christ. 11In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything by the counsel of His will” (Eph 1:10-11)
X. Paul asked “Has God’s word failed?”
“6It is not as though God’s word has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants are they all his children. On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.” (Rom 9:6-7)
XI. Who are the children of promise, like Isaac?
“28Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of the promise.” (Gal 4:28).
Which brings us back to point # 1 😉
Has the church replaced Israel as the “chosen people of God”!
If it looks like a duck…😉
May God give light
